Vegan bubble tea: simpler than it sounds

Bubble tea is one of the easiest drinks to make vegan, because the key ingredient (tapioca pearls) is naturally vegan. The only element to substitute is the milk, and plant milks work very well. Yet in most Paris chains, vegan bubble tea is not really offered: there is often a plant milk surcharge, some syrups contain honey, and pop boba sometimes use animal gelatin. MAISON LE TE and Le Te offer their entire bubble tea menu in vegan version, with no systematic surcharge.

The three plant milks: which choice for which drink

Oat milk: very neutral, creamy texture, ideal for classic milk teas and matcha boba. The plant milk closest to dairy. Soy milk: slightly vegetal note, more liquid texture, perfect for oolong boba where it accompanies without masking. Coconut milk: rich texture, naturally slightly sweet, ideal for fruit boba (mango, strawberry, pineapple) or for matcha which loves the coconut pairing. The team can advise milk by drink.

Pop boba and other vegan toppings

Pop boba (pearls with fruit juice inside that bursts in your mouth) are sometimes made with animal gelatin in some chains. At MAISON LE TE, pop boba used are vegan, agar-agar based with fruit juices. Other available toppings are also vegan: coconut jelly (vegan), mango/strawberry/passion pop boba (vegan), classic tapioca pearls (vegan). No option is exclusively non-vegan.

Who vegan bubble tea is really for

Vegans for whom it is a lifestyle. Lactose-intolerant people avoiding dairy. Flexitarians reducing animal products without giving up pleasures like bubble tea. Taste lovers who note oat or coconut milk sometimes brings a more interesting dimension than dairy (especially with matcha).
